what is the identity of avenu? what role does it intend to fill at the u of o? how can it integrate the arts?
it seems to me that an ambitious goal would be to have an interactive website for avenu, a series of 11x17 mini-issues, and one comprehensive issue that may be annual or semiannual and is taken as a serious publication in its scope, finality, and appearance. the mini issues, then, could serve a variety of roles, and how they relate to the larger issue seems to present a great deal of potential. ultimately, this publication has a great value for the aaa if we fully understand what our intention is and execute without inhibition. if we begin to push the apparent potential, it seems like a feeling of community should emerge. this will require an understanding of contemporary graphic design, a holistic look at the arts programs, content that is equally approachable and interesting, and a willingness to be critical of our environment, our work, and ourselves.
it might be interesting if we have some experience with silkscreening to put together an 11x17 that we could print with a couple colors???
perhaps if we wanted to raise some money for a publication, we could make t-shirts or posters with the same screen(s)??? anyone interested?
Hi, sorry I haven't posted anything sooner. It's a busy term. Anyway, someone mentioned that this issue could be the "identity" issue, which I think is a good idea. It seems that AAA needs a better identity and someway to better integrate all the programs that fall under the heading of AAA. I am meeting with the Dean, Francis, on Tuesday as a type of interview. I'm interested in writing an article discussing the integration of fine arts and architecture in the academic and professional world, as well as getting her opinion on the benefits of such integration and what the future might hold. On a related note some grad students here in the architecture department have been interviewing students and faculty to find out what people think the vision of the school is and what it should be. This also falls under the heading of identity. I missed the last group meeting because I had to go to a LEED workshop, but I'm interested in still meeting everyone because this bolg isn't really a good way to exchange ideas. Maybe we could meet-up at a coffee shop some evening when no one has class, to toss some ideas out. Let me know what you think. --joe mayo (grad arch)
